Man behind notorious Portland hate crime dies

(July 27, 2011, PORTLAND)--The man behind Portland’s most notorious hate crime has died. Ken Mieske died Tuesday in a Salem hospital. He was in prison since 1989 for the beating death of Ethiopian immigrant Mulugeta Seraw.

Back in 1988, Mieske and two other members of a skinhead gang attacked Seraw and a group of Ethiopian men in Southeast Portland after a traffic altercation.

Mieske was later convicted of beating Seraw to death and given a life sentence. While in prison, Mieske suffered from Hepatitis C until his death in the hospital. Prison authorities did not say exactly how he died.
