Adwa Town marks 115th Victory

Adwa Town, March 2, 2011 (Axum) - The 115th Victory of Adwa in which Ethiopia defeated the Italian aggressing forces was celebrated colorfully on Wednesday in Adwa Town, Tigray State.

The Battle of Adwa occurred in 1896. Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II united to defeat an invading force of Italian troops. It was one of the most significant turning points in the history of modern Africa.

Emperor Menelik’s victory over the Italians caused the other major European states, and Italy itself, to recognize Ethiopia as a sovereign, independent state in the context of modern statecraft.

The day was celebrated in the presence of more than 25,000 people.

Addressing the crowd, Speaker of the House of Federation, Kassa Tekleberhan stressed the need for active participation of the public towards development of tourism, which he said is part of the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan of the country.

The speaker also said that this is the time for youth to actively participate in the ongoing efforts to extricate the country from poverty.

Adwa Town Mayor, Araya Merid on his part said the Victory is pride for all Africans and not only for Ethiopians.

Araya on the occasion called on concerned bodies to celebrate the day at a national level in Adwa.

Ethiopian Patriots’ Association Chairperson, Astatke Abate also stressed the need for the present generation to fight against poverty as martyrs did to defend the territorial integrity of the nation.
