Ethiopia starts manufacturing morphine locally

(June 03, 2011, Addis Ababa)- Ethiopia, for the first time, has started manufacturing morphine locally. Morphine is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers.

It is a broad-spectrum painkiller, which is used to treat moderate to severe pain.

The medicine is reported to be good enough to reduce suffering caused by AIDS, cancer and any emergency accidents.

Manufacturing morphine locally does not only mean making it easily accessible but also saving a substantial amount of foreign currency.

ERTA learnt that the first batch of the medicine would be dispatched to patients free of charge.
