Addis Ababa, March 1, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - The UK’s development program in Ethiopia will become its largest in the world in the next two years, the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) announced on Tuesday
In a news conference he gave here today at the British Embassauy in Addis Ababa, Dr, Howard Tyler, Country Representative for DFID said the United Kingdom will increase aid significantly to Ethiopia to help meet the needs of the country’s poorest people and addressing underlying causes of poverty.
Tyler said over the next four years, UK aid to Ethiopia will exceed two billion US dollars.
“Working with the Ethiopian government and other partners, UK aid will deliver real results in Ethiopia, including helping more than 1.2 million people each year to get enough food to avoid hunger: enabling over two million children to school by 2015.”
Half of the beneficiaries will be girls, according to Dr. Tyler.
The fund will be used for providing basic health care to 7.5 million people, giving 800,000 people access to safe drinking water in 2012 and giving two million couples access to family planning and protecting one million children from malaria, he said.
Ensuring access for millions of people to vital services the country is the other purpose of the increase in aid, according to the Country Representative said.
UK aid to Ethiopia will help to address the underlying cause of poverty and fragility through new support for wealth creation, peace and security, increasing accountability and transparency, and tackling the effects opf climate change.
Announcing in aid for Ethiopia, Dr. Tyler said UK aid to Ethiopia is already 10 million people to access food, water, education and health care.
He said this significant increase in UK’s aid will give millions people the chance to lift themselves from poverty.
