ERTA says activities underway to open new TV stations

(March 24, 2011, Addis Ababa, ENA) - The Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency (ERTA) said activities are underway to open 5 to 10 TV stations during the coming five years with a view to enabling the public get access to information.

 The Agency here on Thursday presented plan for the coming five years and mid-term performance report to the Culture, Tourism and Mass Media Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples' Representatives.

Agency General-Manager, Zeray Asgedom on the occasion said the Agency has plan to increase in number TV stations and improve their quality. Zeray said different programs on development and democracy will be broadcast through the new TV stations.

The major focus area of the agency during the coming five years will be creating national consensus. Standing Committee Chairperson, Rabiya Essa on her part said effort of the agency to enable the public get access to information is encouraging

Rabiya also stressed the need for the Agency to give attention to find solution to problems related to accessibility in some areas, in particular where microwave antennas are not installed. Moreover the Agency should focus on issues related to gender, HIV/AIDS, environmental protection and disability, she said.
