(June 21, ADDIS ABABA,(BERNAMA-NNN-ANGOP)--Work on the first phase
expansion of the taxiway at Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport has
been completed at a cost of 1.1 billion Birr (about US$61.9 million),
according to the airport operator, Ethiopian Airports Enterprise.
The head of the company's Public Relations and Communication Service, Wondim Teklu, told the Ethiopian news Agency (ENA) that the expansion work was aimed at enhancing the capacity of the airport to cope with the increasing traffic flow. The airport is capable of serving 34 aircraft at a time following completion of the first phase expansion work.
Bole International Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in East Africa at present, is serving to up to 110 aircraft a day. The number of passengers using the airport is also growing by more that 20 per cent every year. The expansion work is being undertaken in two phases on an 80-hectare site. The first phase of the expansion work had enabled the airport to accommodate 15 additional aircraft, thus helping to reduce traffic congestion at the airport, Wondim said.
The second phase of the expansion work will enable the airport to service ten additional aircraft, he said, adding that so far 27 per cent of the work on the second phase expansion work had been completed. Bole International Airport will have capacity to service 44 aircraft at a time upon full completion of the expansion work. The airport, located on the southern outskirts of Addis Ababa, is the main hub of national flag carrier Ethiopian Airlines and is also a hub for many local chartered flights.
Ethiopian Airports Enterprise is a government-owend institution established to construct, maintain and administer airports in Ethiopia. Last year, it signed a contract agreement with the Chinese Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) Addis Engineering Plc to carry out the expansion work at the airport.
