(Sunday, July 17 2011, the east African)- Is Eritrea a threat to the Horn and the entire East African region? At least, leaders from the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (Igad) believe so.
In the past four years, the Red Sea nation has been accused of giving moral and material support to hardline Islamic insurgents in Somalia including Al Shabaab. Recently, Igad leaders meeting in Addis Ababa made fresh calls on the AU and UN to impose additional sanctions against Eritrea.
The question is, does Eritrea have the capacity to destabilise the entire region, or were the leaders just acting at the behest of Eritrea’s archenemy, Ethiopia? Eritrea believes that it is the allegations instigated by Ethiopia that led to its being sanctioned by the UN Security Council last year.
If Eritrea is a real threat, then the region must employ homegrown measures to ensure that another destabilising force does not emerge after Somalia, instead of merely appealing to the UN.
