( July 9, 2011, Addis Ababa, ENA)--The Addis Ababa University (AAU) gave here on Saturday an honorary degree to South Korean President, Lee Myung-bak.
Tuniversity has conferred the honorary degree to the president in Environmental Sciences on his excellence for outstanding achievement in economic reform through research and development of green technology by creating new job opportunities and achieving harmony between the and economy and environment.
The honorary degree was vested to President, Lee Myung-bak by Education Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, Civil Service Minister, and AAU's Borad Chairman, Juneidin Sado
Addis Ababa University President, Admasu Tsegaye said on the occasion "we are truly delighted and deeply honored by your visit to Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia's oldest and largest institution of higher learning,"
He expressed his believe that South Korean President's visit to AAU would play an important role in enhancing academic and research collaboration between the universities of Korea and AAU in the areas of science and technology, medicine, ICT and development of green economy.
Speaking after receiving the honorary degree, Lee Myung-bak said Ethiopia stood at the center of Korea's cooperation policies toward Africa. Under the outstanding leadership of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia is advancing steadily and is one of the fastest economies in the continent.
He Ethiopia has managed to achieve high growth averaging more than 10 per cent annually. Lee Myung-bak said Ethiopia's five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) represents an ambitious challenge to bring about even a greater leap forward.
"I can feel the passion of the Ethiopian people for the development of their nation."
He further said the Ethiopian people have also rallied behind the government in constructing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam which shows their determination for the development of the nation
He reiterated that Korea wants to be a strong partner in bolstering Ethiopia's potential.
Lee Myung-bak said Korea intends ton contribute to nurturing those human resources through support in education and job training.
He expressed appreciation to and conveyed his respect to President Adnmasu Tsegaye and of the of the Addis Ababa University staff.
