Suspect in Pentagon Scare, Yonathan Melaku, Held Without Bond

(June, 20, 2011, LEESBURG, Va.) - The investigation of a suspicious vehicle that prompted road closures around the Pentagon and led to the apprehension of an Alexandria man has taken a new turn.

22-year-old Yonathan Melaku, a Marine Reservist, was in court in Loudoun County Monday to face charges totally unrelated to that incident.

Melaku was out on bond in connection with a rash of vehicle tamperings on May 26 when he was picked up early Friday morning at Arlington National Cemetery.

Melaku has been ordered held without bond pending a hearing Thursday. Federal officials are still investigating strange behavior that prompted a security scare.

Loudoun County officials are not saying why they added two new grand larceny charges to the four counts he was already facing for allegedly knocking out car windows and stealing cash, cell phones and laptops in the Oaklawn community off Battlefield Parkway.

But it does buy the federal authorities more time to investigate who Melaku really is.

Law enforcement sources say they found the words "Taliban Rules" and Al-Qaida" written in a notebook they found in his backpack.
