(June 11, 2011, MADRID (AP)—Spanish runner Alemayehu Bezabeh has been banned for two years for his involvement in the anti-doping investigation “Operation Galgo.”
The Spanish Athletics Federation had previously cleared the Ethiopian-born Bezabeh from any wrongdoing, but Spain’s High Council for Sports appealed the decision, calling for a four-year ban.
Spain’s sports disciplinary committee overruled the federation’s decision on Friday, but halved the requested ban length.
Bezabeh was detained by Spanish investigators in December 2010 while traveling with trainer Manuel Pascua, who was also implicated in the alleged doping ring.
Galgo, meaning “greyhound” in Spanish, is the third recent Civil Guard investigation into doping in sports.
