Ethiopian shopkeeper wounded in robbery

(Johannesburg, May 18, 2011)- An Ethiopian man was wounded in the neck in an armed robbery at his shop in Ratanda extension six, in Heidelberg, on Wednesday, said police.

"Three suspects came into the shop and demanded money, cigarettes and airtime vouchers," said Constable Tikoane Sonopo.

He said that the shop owner handed over the items, but the robbers demanded more cash.

"The man told them that he had given them all the money he had, but they did not believe him. They fired four shots, one hit the man in the neck," Sonopo said.

The man was taken to hospital and was in a stable condition, he said.

The robbers fled on foot. No arrests had been made and police investigations were continuing.
