Meles calls on public to participate in bringing to court corrupt individuals

Addis Ababa, April 5, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi called on the public to actively participate in the ongoing efforts to bring to court corrupt individuals in the tax collection system.

While presenting his government's performance report for the last eight months to the House of Peoples' Representatives here on Tuesday Meles said that activities are underway to set free the system from corrupt and illegal individuals based on tips off from the public.

The Premier said efforts are underway to prevent illegal activities, capacity limitation as well as backward working procedure and organizational structure with a view to building tax collection capacity. 

He said various projects enabling to create modern and transparent tax and economic system are being implemented.

Encouraging results have been registered in implementation of projects aimed at creating information system , he said, adding, additional efforts are required to further strengthen and speed up the execution process.

Meles said discussion is being held in every three months with main tax payers at a federal level to improve the system.

Such discussion will be expanded to regional states step by step, he said. The Premier said special attention is given in the five-year plan to sources of rent seeking including land administration, tax collection and economic sectors, which lack sufficient market competition.

Integrated activities are underway to modernize urban land administration, he said, adding, situation will be created to undertake similar activities in regional towns.

The government has issued Commercial Registration and Business Licensing as well as Trade Practices and Consumer Protection proclamations during the past eight months to alleviate sources of rent-seeking in the economic sectors, which lack adequate market competition.

Preparations are finalized to implement the new Commercial Registration and Business Licensing Proclamation in all parts of the country while different organizations, which are necessary to ensure consumer protection are being strengthened , he said.

The Premier said measures were taken on some members of the business community engaged in increasing cost of goods following the salary increment made by the government .

The government is conducting study to prevent rent-seeking side by side by implementing laws and undertaking activities to reorganize public enterprises engaged in the business sector.

Meles said ongoing activities to speed up development and maintain good governance will further continue strengthened to prevent rent-seeking.
