Addis Ababa, March 25, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - The House of Peoples Representatives (HPR) urged the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute to further intensify its effort in preserving the biodiversity of the country.
While visiting the institute here on Friday, HPR Agricultural Affairs Standing Committee, Chairperson, Mohammed Abdosh said the institute needs to further enhance its effort to maximize the benefit of the country from its biodiversity resources.
He said that the institute should work closely with pertinent government bodies to protect the immense plant resource of the country.
The chairperson has also urged the institute to put in place PBR and address shortage of human resources.
Institute Acting Director General, Dr. Kassahun Ambaye on his part said his institute has reserved more than 75,000 sample plant genes in the gene bank.
The Institute has 10 gene banks out side Addis Ababa.
It has distributed more than 90,000 plant genes to research and higher learning institutions over the past years, he said.
According to the Director, there are more than 7,000 indigenous plants which have economic values.
He said the institute is undertaking various activities with a view to identify and preserve plants which has economic values.
The institute is closely controlling at check points with a view to prevent illicit movement of indigenous plant species to abroad.
