Role of GIS crucial in implementing GTP : Agency

(March 22, 2011, Addis Ababa, ENA)--Tuesday. The role of Geographic Information System (GIS) is vital towards successful implementation of the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the Ethiopian Mapping Agency Director-General, Sultan Mohammed said.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd general assembly of the GIS Society of Ethiopia (GISSE) held here on Tuesday, the Director said the role of professional societies like GISSE is crucial in order to put in place policies, institutional framework and infrastructure for GIS, among others.

Sultan said the government is committed towards the development of GIS in Ethiopia. According to the Director, over 80 percent of the data and information generated and disseminated nowadays is location based information typically involving geo-referenced locations or positional data.

He said Geoinformation is information that is key in all programs and projects across all social and economic development sectors for planning and decision making for sustainable development as well as for food security, poverty alleviation and environmental monitoring and control, among others.

Thus, the role of GIS is significant to achieve the GTP, he said. Ethiopian Standards Agency Director-General, Almaz Kahsay on her part said the standards for GIS in Ethiopia comprise all the specifications required for ground survey, photogrammetry and remote sensing.

In a message delivered through a representative, GISSE Board Director, Dr. Dagnachew Legese said the Society is determined to contribute share to the successful implementation of the GTP.

Members of the Society from around the country took part in the day-long meeting held under the theme: "Standards Promote Harmony in GIS".
