Gov’t striving to expand safe water, sanitation service

Addis Ababa, March 22, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - Water and Energy State Minister, Kebede Gerba said the government is striving to expand safe water and sanitation service to all parts of the country.

The World Water Day was marked for 18th time in Ethiopia here on Tuesday under the theme “Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge.”

Kebede on the occasion said safe water service coverage has now grown to 68.5 per cent from 19.2 per cent in 1983 E.C in the country.

He said increased amount of budget allocated by the government and development partners, participation of the public as well as focus given to application of low cost and simple technology, among others, contributed to the growth in the coverage.

Natural resource and environmental protection affairs standing committee representative with the House of Peoples' Representatives, Tadesse Messelu on his part announced plan to increase irrigation development by 15.4 per cent during the coming five years.

Tadesse said there is also plan to increase the electric power supply to 10,000 megawatt from the current 2000 megawatt.

He called on all sides to contribute share to achieve the plan as the water sector contributes significant role in the implementation of the Growth and Transformation Plan
