Ethiopians diaspora in US supporting nation’s effort towards ensuring peace, dev’t: Ministry

Addis Ababa, March 20, 2011 (Addis Ababa) The participation of Ethiopian natives and nationals living in the U.S. in prompting Ethiopia and ensuring peace and security in the country is enhanced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Ministry’s American Affairs General-Director, Ambassador Taye Atsikesilassie said majority of Ethiopians are significantly contributing to ongoing development endeavors.

Ethiopians living in the USA estimated nearly 500,000.

He said Ethiopians in the U.S. has played a vital role to the continuity of ongoing development and economic growth that the country has been registering.

According to the Ambassador, most of the investment flow from U.S.A to Ethiopia are owned by Ethiopians or are a joint-venture. Some 250 American companies are operating in Ethiopia.

He said the Ethiopian natives and nationals in that country are playing major role in the efforts to build strong people to people relations between the two countries.

The Ambassador said the Ethiopians are also contributing their share in promoting and looking market access for Ethiopian products in the U.S.

Government considers Ethiopian diaspora as a development drive, he said.

He said the ministry has already launched activities to popularize the Growth and Transformation Plan among Ethiopian Diaspora.
