Addis Ababa, March 29, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - Ethiopia keen on developing tremendous energy generating infrastructures and bolster the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the Ministry of Water and Energy said.
While opening national workshop on GTP focusing on the energy sector development here on Tuesday, State Minister Wondimu Tekle said Ethiopia is unparalleled home of tremendous amount of renewable energy in East Africa.
He said big hydro-power construction endeavor undertaken in the past five years has enabled nation to reach energy supply double-fold and benefit residents in inaccessible rural areas.
Wondimu said the government has earmarked 107 billion Birr to energy sector development.
Some 40 per cent of the population in the country has access power service and a plan has been envisaged to increase the percentage to 75 percent in the coming five years, he said
Energy supply will grow further when the power projects being undertaken currently got finalized, he said and added that numerous activities will be undertaken in the next five years on renewable energy.
Foundations for new bio-fuel, wind and geothermal power resources has been laid to make it major contributor and reduce dependence on petroleum, according to Wondimu.
The workshop would be productive towards the goal of promoting achievement of basic understanding and commitment to clean energy development.
