Nation’s growth facilitating ways to create transformed society: Bereket

Bahir Dar, February 21, 2011 (Bahir Dar. ENA) Government Communication Affairs Office Minister, Bereket Simon said government efforts to ensure sustainable development over the past years has facilitated ways to create transformed society.

Teachers, students and employees of the Bahirdar University have begun deliberation on Tuesday on federalism and the five year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) and university’s strategic plan.

On the occasion, Office Minister Bereket said government is intervening to stabilize the market, fighting dependency mentality and working to ensure justice.

Over the past years the public has been demanding sustainable development not aid, he said and adding, this

demonstrates that the creation of transformed society is achievable.

He said the democratic order that reigns in tolerance and good will of nations, nationalities and people of the country enabled them to forge solidified unity more than ever.

The minister said government viable policies and strategies enabled the nation to register more than ten percent economic growth since 1995 EC.in which he said a remarkable growth.

He said government is striving to expand infrastructures to sustain the ongoing economic growth and to realize the national vision to joining the middle income economies over the next ten years.

Concerning the agriculture sector, he said productivity per hectare is increasing. Some 19 quintals of outputs are being harvested from a hectare from 13 previously.

The minister said 18 million students are enrolling in schools at various levels owing to the construction and expansion of school facilities across the country.

Bereket said doubling agricultural outputs, reducing unemployment, improving the livelihoods of the public and facilitate ways for the industry sector to take the lead from the agriculture is major targets of the GTP.

Hence, the minister urged scholars to intensify their efforts for the attainment of the targets set in the GTP.

The minister said the university community should focus on ensuring quality education, conducting problem oriented researches and adapting technologies for the same cause.

University president Dr. Bayile Damite on his part said higher learning institutions should address the gaps in policies and strategies by conducting scientific researches.

The university community would deliberate on various national issues for three days.
