Ministry says Ethiopia will further strengthen support to NBI

Addis Ababa, February 23, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - Water and Energy State Minister Kebede Gerba said Ethiopia will further strengthen support to the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI).

Speaking at the “Nile Day 2011” celebration here on Tuesday Kebede said the Initiative significantly contributes towards ensuring benefits of the Nile riparian countries.

Cooperation among the countries is getting further strengthened since the establishment of the Initiative, the minister said, adding, the existing cooperation among the countries helps to ensure their benefits.

Kebede said cooperation among the states enables to ensure food security, enhance power supply and further strengthen economic ties between the countries.

Cooperation among the countries also plays significant role in enhancing common benefits, build sustainable economic relation and friendship as well as ensure peace and security.

The aim of celebrating the “Nile Day” is to further expand common benefits and discuss on problems related to utilization of the Nile, he said.

Regional Project Manager of the NBI Water Resources Planning and Management Project, Dr. Hasham Ghany, also said common use of the Nile resource helps the countries to reduce poverty and find solution to socio-economic problems.

The day is celebrated in all Nile Riparian Countries in particular in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the theme “All Together For Better Cooperation”.

Celebrations to mark Nile Day started in the year 2007, with inaugural Regional Nile Day celebrations taking place in Rwanda. This was followed by Ethiopia in 2008, Burundi in 2009 and Uganda in 2010.

NBI is a partnership of nine riparian countries - Burundi, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
