Court gives man 44 years for raping his own daughter

(July 02, 2011, Addis Ababa, Reporter)--Getu Mendida, 48, was given 44 years and 9 months of rigorous imprisonment by the Federal First Instance Court Seventh Criminal Bench at Lideta on Wednsday for raping his 15-year-old daughter. 

Getu was charged by Federal prosecutors on three counts which are rape, for making his own daughter pregnant, and incest back in March. Getu raped his daughter in August 2010 at his house in Akaki, Kaliti sub-City, around a place known as Chefe Mewreja” after he repeatedly punched the victim on the face and on the chest, the first count of the charge read.

The second count of the charge said that Getu raped his daughter again on December 2010 around mid-night in the same place which made her to be pregnant from her father. Getu committed incest by sleeping with his own daughter, the charge read. Because Getu pleaded guilty of all the charges, no witnesses of the prosecutors were heard.

The Federal prosecutors presented their aggravating circumstances on April 5, 2011 stating that the fact that Getu committed the offence using force, that the victim lost her virginity due to his act, that he committed the act repeatedly and the fact that he committed the act on his own daughter after getting her confidence shows his betrayal and deliberate intent to injure or do wrong, therefore requested the court to give a heavier penalty.
