Daska and second-place finisher Aheza Kiros, a fellow Ethiopian, led almost 5,000 runners around the 5-kilometer course through downtown Albany. That shattered the previous participation record by almost 1,000 runners.
Daska missed a course record time by 7 seconds. The record was set last year by Emily Chebet, a Kenyan who this year finished third.
Ballston Spa native Megan Hogan, who only began running four years ago as a sophomore in college, finished fifth with a time of 15:55. Hogan, 23, now runs professionally in Minnesota.
Former Saratoga High runner Nicole Blood, also now a professional, was 16th, finishing in 17:05.
Daska, who has finished second and third at the past two Freihofer's, began to pull ahead about halfway through the race as the course turned back onto Western Avenue after passing through the park.
She finished four seconds ahead of Kiros, who was running her first Freihofer's. Three-time champion Benita Willis of Australia was 12th.
