The Grand Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia is a symbol of a holistic change that is taking place in the country.
A milestone project that disproves the mentality that Ethiopians cannot accomplish such ambitious projects on their own.
That was a statement made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in an exclusive interview with ERTA on Saturday.
The Premier said the Grand Renaissance Dam project is a representation of a holistic change ongoing in Ethiopia.
The project is a landmark scheme that disproves the state of mind that Ethiopians cannot realize such large-scale projects on their own.
Meles lauded the outstanding commitment demonstrated by Ethiopians for the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam.
Citizens have not only taken it as a power generating issue rather as a means to getting out of poverty, he said.
The inspiration and determination of the public reveals their commitment to the ongoing fight against poverty.
He said construction of the Great Renaissance Dam is seen as a focal point for multifaceted changes that are expected to happen in the country.
The government is working to boost the power generation capacity of the country by twofold every three years, he said.
Meles said while considerable progress has been made in the energy sector, power shortage remains to be a major problem in the country.
He said the government has embarked on building cost effective dams that could be completed within a short period considering the increasing power demand.
The Premier commended the willingness being demonstrated by Egypt to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation with Ethiopia.
