Addis Ababa, April 1, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - U.S. Congressman John Garamendi and his wife Patti Garamendi recently visited Ethiopia, in connection with the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Peace Corps, U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa said.
According to the statement the Embassy sent to ENA on Friday, Congressman John Garamendi and his wife Patti Garamendi served as Peace Corps volunteers in Ethiopia in 1966.
The Embassy said the U.S. Peace Corps first came to Ethiopia in 1962 just one year after it was founded in 1961.
It said Ethiopia was one of the first countries to invite the Peace Corps to establish a program.
At that time, the primary focus was in education with the goal of training skilled workers and promoting economic development.
Currently, 73 volunteers serve in Ethiopia in the health, environment and education sectors, it said.
According to the Embassy, a total of 3.500 volunteers have served in Ethiopia since 1962.
