(05 Apr 2011, (Al Jazeera English))--International supermodel, actress and goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Ethiopian Liya Kebede on Monday interviewed on Riz Khan Show Airs live on Al Jazeera English about her work how to help all mothers to get access to medical treatment.
He asked why do so many mothers and newborns continue to go without proper care in the age of modern medicine? She said according to Save the Children one in three women has no professional assistance during childbirth. While the more fortunate are aided by traditional attendants many are alone during delivery putting them and their babies at grave risk.
According to the United Nations, every minute a woman dies from complications that arise during pregnancy or child birth, and every minute 20 children under the age of five years die. Most of these deaths occur because of preventable or treatable conditions, according to the United Nations.
As a teenager, Liya Kebede was “discovered” by a French film director in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia , and moved to Paris shortly thereafter. For the past few years she has lived in New York .
