A traditional local pub is looking further afield to offer its customers a taste of the exotic.
The Maiden Over, in Earley, will still be offering typical British meals, but for three days a week award-winning chef Tutu Melaku will also be serving up Ethiopian dishes.
Landlords Warwick and Rachel Heskins say the bold move is part of their plans to upgrade the Silverdale Road pub.
Mr Heskins said: “We have been here since the beginning of October and we wanted to bring it up to date and keep the clientele coming in.
“They have done food here before and I don’t think it had been that successful because it had been things like chicken nuggets and chips, so we wanted to do something different.”
The couple saw an article in the Reading Post in February in which Ms Melaku, who runs Tutu’s Ethiopian Table at Global Café, in Katesgrove, said she was looking for somewhere else to operate.
Ms Melaku said: “I’m very excited about it. Working in the pub is going to be a big change and I hope it will attract many people.
“They have a coffee lounge, a pub area and dining area, so customers can have a proper dining experience and proper sit-down meal.”
The Ethiopian-born chef will continue at the Global Café, but will be in the kitchen at the Maiden Over on Friday evenings, Saturday lunchtimes and evenings and Sunday lunchtimes.
The venture will be launched with a buffet lunch between noon and 3pm on Sunday.
