Addis Ababa, April 26, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) will increase its investment to 40 million US dollars in Ethiopia’s fight to reduce malaria deaths to zero by 2015, the US Embassy in Addis Ababa said.
According to a statement the embassy sent to ENA, USAID Mission Director Thomas Staal said the new budget will complement the 71 million US dollar PMI has already used to support anti-malaria efforts in Ethiopia since 2008.
This year, with special focus on the Oromia regional State, PMI will be providing 1.8 million bed nets to supplement the 3.4 million nets distributed since 2008, he said.
PMI will also be supporting Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) with insecticide in almost one million households in 50 of the most highly malarious districts of Oromia.
Some 3.5 million doses of the most effective drugs and two million rapid diagnostic tests will be distributed to health centers and clinics, he said.
Staal said the U. S government and the American people have been supporting generations of Ethiopians in the fight to wipe out malaria, and will continue to do so until no more malaria deaths in this country.
The U.S. government’s commitment to fight malaria is a key component of President Obama’s Global Health Initiative- a commitment to invest in healthy and productive lives around the world.
