ETHIOPIA,ITALY : Salini to build 5250MW Millennium project in Ethiopia

(Hydro-World, Tendersinfo news, April 18, 2011)--A contract has been secured by Italy s Salini Costruttori to construct the 5250MW Millennium hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, Africa s largest hydropower complex.

The cost of the contract is estimated at 3.35bnPietro Salini, Managing Director of Salini Costruttori, said. The award is a great technical and engineering achievement that confirms Salini s leadership among the big players in global hydropower construction.

The project is located approximately 700km northwest of Addis Ababa, in the Beishangul-Gumaz National Regional State. It will be implemented by the government through the Ethiopian Electric Power Corp.

A roller-compacted concrete main dam, with two powerhouses to be installed at the toe of the dam, accommodating 10 and five Francis turbine units, respectively, will be included in the construction works.

The dam will have a concrete-lined gated spillway and a 5km long, 50m high saddle dam.The delivery of power from the dam is expected in September 2014. Read more from Hydro-World »
