Countries recognizing Ethiopia’s coffee specialties: EIPO

(April 17, 2011 (Addis Abab,ENA)--The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) said four Ethiopia’s coffee specialties have been registered in 36 countries as trade mark.

Office Director General, Birhanu Adello told ENA that European Union, Japan, US, Canada and China are among the countries recognized the coffee specialties of Ethiopia.

The director said India has recently recognized the four coffee specialties and Ethiopian coffee would be sold in that country for the next eight years.

The coffee specialty includes Sidamo, Yirgachefe and another two Harar coffees. The recognition of these coffee specialties would further enhance coffee's 60 percent share of foreign trade earnings, he said.

He said coffee impacted some 55 million people directly and indirectly in the country. The office is exerting utmost efforts to register Nekmpte and Limu as coffee specialty.
