TB Prevention Program Being Implementing in Government-Owned Health Intuitions

Addis Ababa, March 22, 2011 (Addis Ababa) The Ministry of Health said it has been implementing tuber culosis (TB) prevention program in government-owned health institutions existing in the country.

In a statement he gave here on Monday in connection with World TB Day, Public Relations and Communication Officer with the Ministry, Shemsedin Bambro said the program, which has acceptance internationally, is being implemented in state-owned health institutions effectively.

The program has enabled to achieve fruitful results in prevention TB.

Some 92 every 100,000 people used to die of TB in the past, he said, adding that the number has been reduced to 64 now.

He said TB treatment is also being given also in private health institutions for free.

Only 30 per cent of TB patients in the country visit health institutions, the officer said.

He said efforts are well underway in collaboration with the World Health Organization to increase the percentage to 70 per cent by 2015.

Meanwhile, this year’s World TB Day will be observed on Thursday in Oromia State.
