Strong media industry essential to sustain all-round national dev’t: GCAO

Bahir Dar, March 21, 2011 (Bahir Dar) Government Communication Affairs Office State Minister, Shimelis Kemal said establishing strong media industry is instrumental to sustain the all-round development of the country.

A workshop organized by Bahirdar University and Institute of Ombudsman concluded after three-day deliberation on legal framework and policy of mass media at Bihardar town on Sunday.

On the occasion, the State Minister said the constitution of the country assures equal participation and benefit, as well as freedom of citizens.

He said the national communication system would enable the country to create strong media industry with a view to creating information rich community.

Shemelis said government is undertaking various activities to expand media access and diversity in the country.

He said government would extend support for investors and organized people to engage in community radio.

The state minister said print and electronic media should provide unbiased, ethical, objective and timely information to the public.

Some of the participants said the workshop enabled them to raise their awareness on the issue and suggested that similar workshop must be organized on national polices and strategies for the public.
