Ministry says Ethio-U.S.A cooperation transformed to strategic partnership

Addis Ababa, March 13, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) –
The cooperation between Ethiopia and the U.S.A has been transformed to strategic partnership from emergency assistance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Director General of U.S.A Affairs Directorate with the Ministry, Ambassador Taye Atsqesellassie said the Ethio-US relation is based on mutual benefits and national interest of the two countries.

Ambassador Taye said the cooperation between the two countries is transformed to strategic partnership from emergency aid, the ambassador said.

Ethiopia is one of the African countries, which have strong ties with the U.S.A.

The countries are working closely to maintain peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

The development cooperation of the two countries is getting enhanced, he said.

Annual U.S. contribution to Ethiopia’s development activities has reached over one billion USD , the Director noted.

The fund is used to execute various development activities in the areas of health, education, agriculture, expansion of infrastructure development , environmental sustainability as well as maintaining democracy and good governance, among others.

Ambassador Taye said some U.S.A investors have so far engaged in various development activities in Ethiopia.

Efforts are underway to gain international support towards success of the Five-Year Growth and Transformation Plan, he said, adding, the U.S.A is conducting a study enabling it to contribute towards the same goal.
