Ethiopian Veteran journalist passes away

Addis Ababa, March 13, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - Ghion Hagos, a veteran journalist, who worked in the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), for more than three decades died here on Saturday at the age of 76.

Born in Arero locality in the then Sidamo Province in January 1935, Ghion attended his primary and secondary education at the Emperor Yohannes Primary School in Mekelle Town of Tigray State and Kotebe Secondary School in Addis Ababa City respectively.

Ghion, graduated with BA degree from Missouri University in the USA in journalism. The late Ghion had served in the Ethiopian Herald as a reporter and then worked as an editor for the then Voice of Ethiopia English Service.

Ghion also worked as Information Coordinator in the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) who became later Head of ENA.

He also worked as journalist representing ENA/Ethiopia at the then Pan-African News Agency (PANA) headquartered in Dakar, Senegal, which was responsible for producing and disseminating news information about African countries to the rest of the world.

The late Ghion also served as correspondent of a German News Agency called Deutshe Welle for many years.

The dozens of articles he wrote about Ethiopia during his journalism career in English language had won him an acclaim among the various media organizations he served at and colleagues he worked with.
