Christian students headed to Ethiopia

News Press Now, March 11, 2011
Some St. Joseph Christian School students are giving up their spring break to work in Ethiopia.

Grace Chester, Stephen Gregory, Taylor Buford and Matt Dahlgren will join a group that will leave next week to dedicate a well and do other mission work in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

It’s the culmination of efforts the school undertook last year to raise funds to build a well at Kind Heart Child Aid Development Organization, an educational and vocational training center in Addis Ababa.

The school has raised $24,000, but needs an additional $4,000 to complete the project, said Joey Austin, school volunteer.

“It’s amazing what we’ve been able to accomplish,” Ms. Austin said. “Certainly with the help of the Lord first and foremost, and lots of prayers over the project.”

The students, along with 10 other people, including some school parents and members of Brookdale Presbyterian Church, will spend 10 days in Ethiopia. Beside dedicating the well, the team will donate books to the Kind-School and Tree of Glory School to start a library. The students also raised more than $1,000 to provide gift-bag items for the students at the school and patients at a nearby hospital.

The students also raised $2,4000 each to pay their way on the trip.

Mr. Gregory, a senior, raised some of the money for his trip through the family Christmas letter.

“We send out a Christmas letter every year, and in that my mom tells something about each kid. In my little section, she talked about Ethiopia and how I was going,” he said,

Ms. Chester, another senior, said although she’s excited about making the trip, she doesn’t know what to expect.

“But I’m prepared to go with an open heart for the kids who we see there,” she said.

Mr. Dahlgren, a junior, said his mother went to Ethiopia two years ago. He was inspired by the pictures she brought back.

“I couldn’t wait to get over there and experience what she was experiencing and serve the Lord and do all that,” he said. “I can’t wait to go hang out with the little kids and play soccer with them.”

Mr. Buford said he’s never been out of the country. He’s looking forward to the experience.

“What better place or better time than now to do a mission trip, go help God, go play with those little kids, maybe start working in their lives,” he said.

Danny Maggart, secondary principal, will also make the trip. He said he was proud of the kids.

“Not only are they taking their spring break to head to Ethiopia, but they’re heading to Ethiopia and hang out with their principal; that’s probably the biggest sacrifice they’re making,” he said with a laugh. “The school here and the kids here have really taken this project on and given a lot of themselves in a lot of ways.”
