(Addis Ababa, Monday, 21 March 2011)- The Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA) is to finally launch construction of the African Avenue (Bole Road).
Fekade Haile, general manager of the city road authority, told Capital that the 4.1km road construction project had been delayed because of paperwork and contractual issues, though he emphasized that this is not an unusual occurrence because projects can’t start until the demarcation process is completed.
“This is a high priority road and we have to finish the project quickly; so we are working hard to get things done on time,” the general manager explained.
Previously the city road office undertook the construction project with the demarcation, but the past experience has been one of the major factors for the project delay.
According to the general manager, currently a committee made up of high level officials from telecommunication, electric power supply and the city water office are following the process through their organizations.
The head said that the construction project will begin at the end of March.
Bole Road stretches from Meskel Square to Bole International Airport, which is the only international gate to the city and one of the main traffic arteries in Addis.
The project had been scheduled several years ago. However financing has been an issue especially with the global economic downturn.
However, now the project is being financed through two Chinese banks; China Exim and Export-Import Bank of China.
CRBC Addis, subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation, won the bid for the project that will consume 60 million dollars.
The 4.1km asphalt project incorporates three fly-over bridges and two road junctions around Olympia, Wollo Sefer and Rwanda Embassy.
The road project is expected to conclude within a year, once ground is broken.
