Dar es Salaam.Tanzania’s track star Dickson Marwa claimed $ 1500 cash prize after finishing 8th overall in the Ras Al Khaimah half marathon held over the weekend in the United Arab Emirates.
Marwa, who is struggling to regain form, said it was a tough race as he was forced to fight against well organised teams of runners from Ethiopia and Kenya.“It was, however my personal best time this season,” said Marwa who also runs in 5,000m and 10,000m races.
Ethiopia claimed the men’s discipline title while Kenya emerged the overall winner of the women’s discipline. The men’s event winner Deriba Merga from Ethiopia pocketed $25,000, while the runner up Bernard Kipyego from Kenya grabbed $12,000 and third-placed Leonard Langat also from Kenya won $9,000.
Kenya’s Mary Keitany who claimed the event’s jackpot after shattering the event record.She claimed &25,000 as the overall winner and $50,000 for breaking the race record.Ethiopian Dire Tune grabbed the runner up position to walk home $12,000 cash prize while her team mate Mare Dibaba claimed $9,000 after finishing third overall.
The event, for Marwa and other athletes serves as part of preparations for the 2012 London Olympics Games.Tanzania is among other countries expected to field athletes in the event, held after every four years.
In the previous games in Beijing, China, the country fielded athletes in athletics, boxing, table tennis and boxing but failed to win medals.
