The Ethiopian Heritage College Scholarship Fund is now encouraging Washington, DC metro area students graduating high school to apply submit applications for the 2011-2012 academic year. Applications are due June 25, 2011 and must be received before 5:00 PM.
The scholarship will be awarded and sponsored by Washington, DC personal injury and qui tam law firm Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata, & Siegel, P.C.Information about the Ethiopian Heritage Scholarship has been circulated to DC metro area high school guidance counselors, who have been asked to inform eligible students about the scholarship and to encourage eligible students to apply.
To be eligible for the $1,000 scholarship, students must reside in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Washington, DC and be admitted to a two-year or four-year university or college. Students related by blood or marriage to any current or former member of the selection committee are not eligible to apply.
The selection committee will award the scholarship to eligible students, who will be chosen based on academic standing, community service, an essay and other criteria. These characteristics will be judged according to, among other factors, high school GPA, a written essay, and a proven record of service to the community. After considering each application, the committee may invite an applicant to a personal interview.
The scholarship funds will be disbursed in August and February, and may only be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, room and board, and books. Scholarship recipients will be required to submit reports every semester or grading period to demonstrate their grades and overall academic performance. The scholarship will be withheld if the recipient's academic performance is not satisfactory.
Eligible students must be residents of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Washington, DC, which in this circumstance is defined to include Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William counties in Virginia; Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties in Maryland; as well as the City of Alexandria, Virginia.
