The African Green Revolution Forum 2014 commences in Addis Ababa

(Sep 02, 2014, (mfa)--The African Green Revolution Forum opened on Monday in Addis Ababa and will continue to Thursday (September 4). The Forum, which is organized annually by the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa and the African Union Commission, aims to deliver the objectives of the AU Year of Agriculture and Food Security.

These include broad based and inclusive consultation, and dialogue among parliamentarians, women groups, youth groups, farmers’ organizations, and the private sector over agriculture and food and nutrition security.  The African Union’s new commitments to accelerated agricultural growth and transformation goals for the next decade were adopted in June 2014.

They reaffirm the continent’s resolve to end poverty through inclusive agricultural growth.  African Green Revolution Forum 2014 hopes to translate these political commitments into meaningful action on the ground for Africa’s small holder farmers and rural communities.

The Forum 2014 presents the opportunity for over 800 leaders from farmers’ associations, agribusiness companies, research institutes and non-governmental organizations and from African governments to engage each other on the new Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) which covers land and water management, market access, food supply and hunger and agricultural research, and the  framework for Agriculture and Food Security agreed to by African Heads of State at the last AU Summit.

The Forum is attended by Dr. Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Kofi Annan, former Secretary-general of the UN, Ministers including Tefera Deribew, Minister of Agriculture of Ethiopia, parliamentarians and civil society representatives from around Africa.
