According to a statement the Embassy sent to ENA yesterday, Kerry participated in the ceremony with ECX CEO Anteneh Assefa, owner of Green Coffee, Tadele Abraha and USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Dennis Weller.

The release said that with the certification, US importers will comfortably purchase Ethiopian coffee owing to they receive a specific quality. It said certified labs provide consistent testing, grading and objective evaluation of coffee throughout the world.

Lab inspectors ensure global compliance and are an integral part of working toward consistency in grading and evaluation of specialty coffee. Using consistent grading and adhering to international standards will increase the value of Ethiopian coffee in international markets. ECX is a commodities exchange established April 2008 in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is an important part of Ethiopian culture. An invitation to attend a coffee ceremony is considered a mark of friendship or respect and is an excellent example of Ethiopian hospitality.
