Church backs nation's middle income vision: Patriarch

(Mar 10, 2013, (Addis Ababa))--The newly elected Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church Patriarch His Holiness Abune Mathias said the Church will further strengthen development activities to enable the country join the list of middle income countries.

Following talks with Prime Minister Haile-Mariam Dessalegn yesterday, the Patriarch told journalists that the Church will assist of the government in the national development drive. The Patriarch also called on followers of the Church to actively participate in development activities in collaboration with other religious institutions.

Prime Minister Haile-Mariam on his part stressed the need for the Church to further enhance development activities. The Premier said the Church needs to educate in particular the youth to actively participate in development activities in the country.

The Prime Minister also urged the Church, which, he said, has an important place in the history of the country, to intensify efforts in collaboration with other religious institutions to bring about peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
