(June 22, 2012, Addis Ababa)--A consultative meeting to organize a national council for a popular movement against illegal human trafficking was held today in the Prime Minister’s Office.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, Redwan Hussein, Public Mobilization Advisor to the Prime Minister with the rank of minister, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abadula Gemeda, Ministers from relevant ministries, and the Speakers from the Councils of the Regional States.
The meeting was called to discuss ways to create a popular tide against illegal trafficking and it agreed to set up a national council to tackle the problem of illegal trafficking which is fast becoming a national problem. Despite the existing legal framework criminalizing illegal trafficking, and scattered efforts by various stakeholders to address the issue, the problem has continued and shown no sign of abating.
The meeting agreed that the national council should be established to coordinate activities and create awareness among society. A national task-force has been set up to facilitate the formation of the council, and a second meeting will be held on September 25th to monitor progress.
