(April 5, 2012 (Addis Ababa)--Prime Minister Meles Zenawi here on Thursday held discussion with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah on ways to make quality and effective development assistance .
The premier said USAID is supporting Ethiopia in all spheres and remarkable achievements have been registered in food security and health sectors.After the discussion Dr. Shah told journalists that the discussion with the premier focused on “Feed the Future” program and other development partnership.
The program is aimed at enhancing the productivity of the agriculture sector focusing on provision of agriculture inputs and modern technologies for smallholder farmers.The program, initiated by US President Barak Obama, carried out over the past two years, is bringing tangible results, the director said.Dr. Shah said the program enabled farmers to boost products and productivity and thereby improve their livelihoods.
He said Ethiopia has potential to get better results from the agriculture sector and USAID would extend its support to Ethiopia.According to an official from the ministry of foreign affairs, the two parties have discussed as to how overhaul the agriculture system in EthiopiaThe discussion was also centered on infrastructure development that would help improve the livelihoods of farmers.
The discussion between PM Meles and USAID Administrator was constructive and effective.According to the official, the US government is providing more than one billion US dollars a year to Ethiopia for education, health, food security, good governance and other sectors.
