(April 05, 2012, Addis Ababa)--The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise (EAE) will build four new airports in line with playing its part with the much publicized Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s administration put on the table at the beginning of the last Ethiopian fiscal year.
The enterprise has pans of increasing the number of airports from the existing 17 to 21 during the GTP period extending to 2015, where renovating and upgrading of existing airports is part of the plan, according to the latest journal the enterprise published. The enterprise is undertaking various activities aimed at enhancing its facilities with a 1.29 billion birr budget allocating for the current fiscal year, according to the journal.
Presently, the enterprise is administrating 15 airports and two airstrips out of which four are international standard including Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, Dire Dewa Airport and Bahir Dar Airport.
The country’s eighteenth airport is under construction in Kombolcha with an investment outlay of over 60 million birr. The nineteenth airport, named General Hayelom Araya Airport, will be build in Shire, Mekele, according to the PR department of the enterprise. The site of the other two airports, which might be in Somalia region, is under study.
