(Wed Mar 28 2012, 9NEWS)--A father is suing a Sydney school over its proposed expulsion of his son for his afro hairstyle. Mazen Zraika is challenging an expulsion order made by the Australian Islamic College of Sydney in relation to his Year 9 son Billal.
In the NSW Supreme Court on Wednesday, Justice Elizabeth Fullerton was told an injunction had been granted on the order, meaning Billal was still attending the school but his "hair was not in accordance with the policy".
The student is of Lebanese and Ethiopian decent. After hearing preliminary legal arguments, the judge adjourned the case temporarily.
"I encourage the parties to come to some resolve to avoid what will be a costs question and in the interests of ensuring the young gentleman is able to stay at school, mixed with his peers, and receive a very sound education," she said. "No young adolescent needs to be the subject of this degree of focus." The parties are expected to return to court later on Wednesday.
