Maid challenges jail term;
case adjourned to Jan 16

(January 13, 2011, RAS AL KHAIMAH)--An Ethiopian maid on Tuesday appeared in the RAS Court of Cassation to challenge a jail term passed against her for having consensual sex out of wedlock with the 15-year-old son of her Emirati sponsor.

Earlier, the RAK Court of First Instance found the domestic help guilty of adultery and illegal pregnancy. She was then ordered to serve three months in jail, and deportation thereafter.

The ruling was upheld in the RAK Court of Appeal.Being dissatisfied with the judgment, the woman’s lawyer challenged the verdict before the RAK court of Cassation, presided over by Chief Judge Yahya Jalal, who adjourned the case to Monday, January16.

As per court records, the case unfolded two years back, when an employer accompanied a pregnant maid under his sponsorship to deliver at the Sager Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah.While processing the formalities required for issuing the birth certificate for the new born, the gynaecologist in-charge discovered the illicit relationship and that the mother was not married, and alerted the RAK Police.

The accused woman first admitted to having consensual sex out of wedlock with the Emirati schoolboy and son of her sponsor during police interrogations and investigations.As such, the case was referred to the RAK Public Prosecution where the maid claimed that the boy had raped her, and her sponsor had locked her up for nine months until she gave birth.

The boy, however, claimed that he had fallen prey to the maid’s seduction.The case was then arraigned to the RAK Court of First Instance which issued the said jail and deportation sentences. The teenage son, who was sent to a juvenile delinquents centre, was handed over to his parents for observation.
