The 12 appeared before magistrate Aridah Chulu and through an interpreter pleaded guilty to the offences. In the first count, they are charged with consenting to being smuggled into the country, contrary to the Anti-Human Trafficking Act of 2008. They unlawfully did consent to being smuggled into Zambia from Mbeya in Tanzania. In the second count, they are charged with failing to appear before the nearest immigration office upon entry into Zambia, contrary to immigration rules.
When Ms Chulu asked why they consented to be smuggled into the country, they said they had based their trust on their agent who told them that everything was in place. They said they consented to be smuggled into the country en-route to Zimbabwe and South Africa where they were in search of jobs, schools and asylum.
Among the 12 is a woman who told the court that she did not know anything about having invalid documents to enable her travel from her country because everything was done by her Kenyan agent. Two of the accused said their valid documents were stolen while in transit. The matter comes up on January 18, 2012 for facts.
