Evans training for fatherhood after applying to adopt Ethiopian boy

(28 Dec, 2011, (Australia))--Australian Tour de France champion Cadel Evans and his Italian wife Chiara Passerini are in the process of adopting a 12-month-old baby boy from Ethiopia and hope to have him living with them at their home in Stabio, Switzerland, by next month.

Passerini, a gospel choir singer and pianist, dropped a clue of their plan with a Boxing Day message on Twitter, ''We had the most special Christmas of our lives...''.Attached to the social media message was a picture of her holding the hand of a baby boy's hand. Then Evans, 34, who became the first Australian to win the Tour in July, tweeted yesterday, ''Being quieter on Twitter ... busy baby sitting! ;o)''

Soon after Evans' tweet, Passerini confirmed to Fairfax that they have applied to adopt an Ethiopian boy and that was the reason for their early departure from Australia on Dec16.

It was understood that Evans's decision to return to his Swiss base was in order to train in the peace and quiet of a European winter - as he did in preparation for this year's season - after a hectic visit that included a number of sponsors' appearances and media commitments.
