(2011-10-25, WASHINGTON, October 24 (Xinhua) -- The United States will offer an additional aid of 100 million U.S. dollars to East Africa for fighting drought and hunger, State Secretary Hillary Clinton announced Monday.
"Today, I am pleased to announce that we are providing an additional 100 million dollars, primarily in food assistance, for drought-affected areas in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia," Clinton said at a forum on food security at the U.S. State Department.
"This new funding will help us reach more people and support our humanitarian commitment well into 2012," she added.
According to Clinton, the United States has already committed almost 650 million dollars for food and humanitarian assistance to this region.
According to humanitarian agencies, 13.3 million people are currently affected by the severe drought in the Horn of Africa.
In Somalia alone, the number of people suffering the worst drought in more than half a century will climb to 1 million by the end of this year from the current 750,000.
