(10 September 2011,Tasmania, Australia)--The Minister for Community Development, Cassy O’Connor, has celebrated with Tasmania’s Ethiopian Community at the official opening of this year’s Ethiopian New Year Festival.
September 11th marks the start of the Ethiopian New Year, which is also known as ‘Enkutatash’. ‘’Today’s celebration is an important occasion for our Ethiopian community, ‘’Ms O’Connor said.
“New year celebrations are not exclusively a religious holiday, they are also an opportunity to exchange New Year greetings and cards in lieu of the traditional bouquet of flowers.
“The Festival includes Ethiopian traditional costume,dance, food as well as the formal Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony,” she said. Ms O’Connor said Tasmania was fortunate to have a strong Ethiopian community.
Recent figures from the Department of Immigration have shown that between July 1991 and June 2011, nearly 300 Ethiopians have come to Tasmania,” she said.
“Tasmania's growing multicultural community is making our State a richer, more vibrant and more diverse place to live, and I’m pleased we have been able to offer our support to the Ethiopian community through this event.
“Events like this provide an opportunity forEthiopian community members to build a sense of community and also to establish fellowship and friendship in their new home in Tasmania," she said.
Ms O’Connor said the Festival was organised by the Ethiopian Community Association of Tasmania, which received $2,000 from the Tasmanian Government’s Community Capacity Building Grants Program for the even.
