(Sep 29, 2011, DUBAI)--The Dubai Public Prosecution has referred an Ethiopian national to the criminal court on Wednesday for assault and theft.
The 24-year-old accused, IAA, along with his accomplice still at large, reportedly snatched Dhs80,000 from LS, a 49-year-old Indian national, after beating him up.
LS, describing the incident that had taken place in March, said he had just collected the money from an exchange centre in the Murshid Market in Dubai when he encountered a group of Africans. He said one of them advanced towards him and “violently knocked me down from the right side and kicked my left calf...he then ran away.”
“I stood up and checked my pocket, realising that the money was missing,” he said, adding that he tried to run after them crying out to the pedestrians for help. Passers-by managed to grab hold of one of the suspects with the help of a police patrol, which was in the area at the time. The other suspect, however, ran away.
An officer from Naif Police Station, Mohammed Yasir, who was in charge of the patrol, said that he and his colleagues saw a crowd chasing the accused along Sabkha Road. “We stepped out and detained him.”
He noted that after the suspect was caught, he confessed to stealing from the victim, saying that when he saw the crowd chasing him, he decided to run for his safety. The victim identified IAA as a thief and told the police about the incident.
