Education minister: schools must accept Ethiopian students

Schools that refuse to accept Ethiopian students will be punished severely, said Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar in a Knesset Education Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Sa'ar explained that there was in fact a national-religious school in Petah Tikva that was refusing Ethiopian enrollments, but did not refer to the institution by name. According to Israel Radio, Sa'ar was referring to the Or Haya school and its decision to not accept five Ethiopian students. The distribution of Ethiopians students from the Nir Etzion School in Petah Tikva, following its closing, will be completed by the end of the week, the minister said.

The school was closed after parents protested last week because despite city provisions, the school, which they considered an "Ethiopian ghetto," was made up of nearly only Ethiopian children.
